Sorry for the absence on the blog for a couple of days...
On Wednesday Dan and I spent the entire day (and I mean the entire day, finishing at midnight) sanding our floors back to natural wood.
When we moved in to this house 6 years ago we stripped the floors and stained them dark.
I was influenced by Victorian homes with dark wooden floor boards as seen in Living Etc Magazine.
Not realising how dark it would make my home feel.
After having 2 boys who rode around constantly on these for 4 years - the floor was left looking scuffed and tired.
A change was needed.
Oh the dust!
It is everywhere.
I am now spending days wiping down surfaces and hoovering the place.
Yesterday was my birthday and instead of lounging in a spa or eating delicious food... I carried on sanding!
(something is wrong here! - I hear you cry!)
Yes and you'd be right.
NEVER AGAIN!
But doesn't the floor look wonderful?
We still need to varnish it to seal it from apple juice spills.
And of course the whole of downstairs needs a lick of paint.
That green is going.
To be replaced by this colour I think?
Any colour suggestions?
It will be on the wall where the sideboard sits and the kitchen wall too.
The green wall will be painted out white.
So thoughts?
x
Ooh your floors look beautiful. Well done you! And Happy belated Birthday too. We did one room then gave up and painted the rest! As for colours... yellow?! x
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing! I love it. We need to do ours but I think we're going to paint the floors. Can recommend the lovely wax rather than a shiny varnish (will try to dig out the name for you if you want a matt finish).
ReplyDeleteOval Room Blue is lovely. We have the F&B paint book if you want to check out the pics next time you're round!
Well worth all the dust, it looks lovely. We have the most hideous carpet in the living rooms that I wanted to rip up the day we moved in, but then we just covered it up with rugs. 9 years later I'm sooooo desperate to have some nice chunky floorboards put down. I think it might even happen soon.
ReplyDeleteAnd a very happy un-birthday to you, sorry I'm late!
Looks wonderful indeed. Well done with the sanding - it's got to be one of the worse jobs out there. I love that green on your walls I find it so refreshing, but I know what it's like when you fancy a change : )
ReplyDeleteMy goodness - amazing work! And happy birthday to you! xx
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! The floors look amazing - definitely worth all the effort. x
ReplyDeleteLooks great! And happy birthday :) xxx
ReplyDeleteOooh the floors look so wonderful- well done, worth all that effort. I'm not too keen on that blue, too dark for my taste, but you always seem to visualise things so well! xx
ReplyDeleteIt looks really great. We sanded our french oak boards back to the natural wood after staining them a dark walnut colour - they looked so much better. We gave ours a few coats of clear varnish and they have worn beautifully and bounce so much light around the house. That oval room blue will go really well with the floor. And happy birthday by the way! x
ReplyDeleteoh good. from the title of your post i thought you were disappointed! it looks fabulous, so much lighter. it'll make such a difference. i love that blue. looking forward to seeing it all finished. x
ReplyDeleteIt looks incredibly fresh!! Job incredibly done I'd say! Happy belated B-day by the way and have a fun and hopefully relaxing weekend. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought you were just enjoying birthday treats. The floors are great though and so satisfying. I have an unhealthy relationship with the Farrow & ball colour chart. I love the blue. Another blue I like is lamp room grey (go figure) which changes colour according to the light. You have made me want to go home and paint a wall...
ReplyDeleteOh I really love your green wall! But I understand the need for a change, I'm sure it'll look great. Looking forward to seeing the results!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! it'll be amazing once the dust settles. and your credenza, so jealous.
ReplyDeleteOh Lou the floors are wonderful. Well done on all your efforts - it's totally worth it! Have you seen the Fired Earth Midcentury Colours for paint - thought they would be very you! I painted the living room Skylon Grey and I love it. x
ReplyDeletePs very very jealous of the Eames DSW.
Wonderful it is!! And the color you are going for on your wall is definitely what I would be going for if I was painting now! Have a great weekend, hope you get some rest and looking forward to seeing the final pics!
ReplyDeleteOh the floor boards look gorgeous - and you are so lucky to have them! I would love to have wooden floors...
ReplyDeleteI do very much like your existing green paint ... and the proposed new one too. Good luck with the painting and here's hoping you get to the end of the dust very soon!
Happy Birthday too!
x
Looove them - and so worth the dust! I also love the colour for the walls you've chosen. How exciting to be having a makeover/change around. I am so desperate to do that myself! Have a lovely weekend and glad you got to have a nice meal out with da boys last night x x x
ReplyDeletethe floor looks so much better lou. it gives the space beautiful light. i also know that dust well. can't wait to see it come together for you. have a good weekend. xo
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful - it's amazing how much lighter it makes your whole area look.
ReplyDeleteLooks super! Easy for anyone else to say, but worth the effort I think! Belated birthday wishes to you! You'll have to properly celebrate once it's all finished!
ReplyDeleteYour floor is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh no, I missed your birthday! Happy belated birthday lovely lady! Hope you had a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteYour floorboards... LOVE! This is exactly how I would like ours (if only we owned the place!).
Happy weekend xx
The floors are brilliant, well worth the effort!. We sanded the floors in our old house and I loved them. Sadly the floors in our home now have been hacked to death. When we moved in I excitedly ripped up the carpets but quickly put them back down when I saw what a mess they were! Ada :)
