Creative Juice - Winter Solstice Lanterns...

Winter Solstice is only a few days away.  Marking the mid-point through the year.  A time celebrate the darkest shortest day with a huge family feast and to light many, many candles.

A few years ago, the boys and I made our own Solstice lanterns.  Using scraps of tissue paper, jam jars and pva glue.  They glow so beautifully when lit at night.  This year we are making some more using glass pens, I can't wait to see the results.

It may be cold and gloomy outside, but inside it will be all a glow.

Mid winter solstice...

Most people who talk about the darkest days of winter, welcome the Mid-Winter Solstice.
From now on we will be having slightly longer days... until the Mid-Summer Solstice in June.
(other way round in the Southern Hemisphere).
Solstice to me is a treasured time.
Candles are lit around the house.
The boys and I in the past have made solstice lanterns out of jam jars, tissue paper and tea-lights.
We spend the evening feasting on a big celebratory stew... with crusty bread.
Then toasting marshmallows on the fire.
Telling or reading stories and cuddling up on the sofa.
It is the only thing to do on the shortest, darkest day of the year.  I think I love it more than it's summer sister don't you?
Happy Solstice my lovely friends.

Past years of solstice are here.
Have a look at the curve of Venus - stunning!
Oh and last day of school!

winter solstice....

Happy Winter Solstice!
We are at the half way point of the year once again.  The darkness of the night rules over the day.
We spent this afternoon making lanterns to light the dark night and to welcome the return of the sun from tomorrow.
The boys glued little strips of coloured tissue paper to empty jam jars and then decorated them with jewels.
Once lit with tea lights they are the most beautiful candle I have ever seen.

Solstice was celebrated at sunrise this morning at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, something I have always wanted to go to.  I have been several times to mid summer solstice at Stonehenge, but never during the winter celebrations... it looked incredible in the pictures.

Christmas is sooo close, you can practically touch it!
Don't forget to light a candle tonight...
Happy Solstice.

Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

Happy winter Solstice!

So amazing that today was also a lunar eclipse.

I didn't see the Eclipse (although I wish I had), apparently the skies turned an amazing shade of red, turning the frozen ground to glow deep crimson.

For the first time in nearly 400 years the lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice. At one point, both sun and eclipsed moon was briefly visible above the horizon, called a selenehelion.

Wow, magical!

So, today, on the shortest most magical day of the year... we are planning to celebrate with many candles, good food & company.

Have a wonderful solstice.
